The Saga Centre is situated in the middle of the town of Hvolsvöllur in Southern Iceland. Opened in 1997, the Centre offers guided tours through the exhibition on the Njál´s Saga and the Viking age. The Centre is also the information and cultural site for the community of Rangarþing eystra and gives guests the opportunity to explore the community’s rich history from its earliest days to the present. The Saga Centre also organizes many special events for both private and corporate groups. Please contact our offices for details.

The Saga Centre houses two exclusive exhibitions. “The Exhibition of Njala” introduces guests to the characters of Iceland’s ancient stories, Viking cosmology, and the literary art of the Sagas, the country’s most important contribution to the world of literature.

The Centre also house the “Exhibition of Cooperative Society” where guests can learn about the history of trade and commerce and the cooperative movement in Iceland during the 20th century. In addition guests can also view a model of the world’s first national assembly established around 930. The model was built to celebrate the Millennium of Christianity and explains how the Lögberg, or Law Rock, was used as the hub of the Alþing meeting. It was from this rock that the Law Speaker, proclaimed the laws of the Commonwealth for members of the general assembly.

At the Centre one will also find the Ormur Gallery and its display of Icelandic paintings inspired by the history and natural beauty of the region.

Guests can also dine in the Saga Hall, a replica medieval longhouse complete with timber walls and horsehide bench coverings. The hall can also be rented out for private parties, meetings and other functions.

The information Centre for Hvolsvöllur is located in the reception area at the Saga Centre. Here you will find information regarding nearby attractions as well as travel plans for the region and for other parts of Iceland. Take a peak at the souvenir/bookshop that is located in the museum and find that perfect gift or souvenir to remember your visit with.
